Hatha Yoga Classes
Ms Tan has a 7 years experience in Hatha Yoga and graduated from Yoga Vidya Gurukul, Nashik, India. For duration of 1 hour, she will concentrate ½ hour on Asana and ½ hour on Pranayama.
The term Hatha Yoga has been commonly used to describe the practice of asana (postures). The syllable “ha” denotes the pranic (vital) force governing the physical body and “tha” denotes the chitta (mental) force thus making Hatha Yoga a catalyst to an awakening of the two energies that govern our lives. The Hatha Yoga system includes asana along with the six shatkarmas (physical and mental detox techniques), mudras and bandhas (psycho-physiological energy release techniques) and Pranayama (pranic awakening practices).
ASANA
Asana is a Body posture, it is a Sanskrit word used to describe a position of the body. Patanjali, the founder of Ashtanga Yoga defines asana as “Steady and comfortable posture”. Many asanas are practiced in Hatha Yoga tradition, primarily to achieve better physical and mental health. Asanas have deep impact on the entire body and mind complex, it affects different systems in the body like muscular, respiratory, circulation, digestive, excretory, reproductive, endocrine, nervous system.
PRANAYAMA
“Pranayama is control of Breath”. “Prana” is Breath or vital energy in the body. On subtle levels prana represents the pranic energy responsible for life or life force, and “ayama” means control. So Pranayama is “Control of Breath”. One can control the rhythms of pranic energy with pranayama and achieve healthy body and mind.

YOU HAVE A GOOD WEBSITE. IT WOULD BE GOOD IF YOU COULD DIVIDE YOGA INTO BASIC, MEDIUM AND ADVANCE THROUGH PORTRAYING DIFFERENT POSTURES. IT INDEED WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR NEW COMERS AND BEGINNERS.

Under “Asana”, Patanjali is quoted as “founder of Ashtanga yoga”. I’ve read that Pattabhi Jois is the ‘founder’ of ashtanga yoga which is ‘revealed’ in 6 parts or series. Series 1 and 2 are practised widely, while few have made the grade to series 3 & 4. PJ’s grandson who’s still alive and practising, is still working through the last 2 series. The series were handed down through notes, hence the difficulty of the challenge.
Patanjali is credited with the Sutras, the first formally documented thoughts on the practice and philosophy of yoga.
