一個人如果無路可走，就是「走投無路」；一個人如果只賸一條路可走，就是「別無選擇」；一個人如果只能在兩條路中選擇其一，就是「左右為難」；當一個人出現了三條以上的路可選擇時，便有了「彈性」。
一個人如果完全找不到路活下去，便是「走投無路」，只好自殺；一個人如果只找到一條路勉強忍辱屈就，便是「別無選擇」，就會活得痛苦；一個人如果只有兩條路可走，就會「左右為難」，他只能心不甘情不願的擇一而從，而後不論他是選了哪一條，他又會後悔他沒有選擇另一條路走，就如同結了婚的人會羨慕那些沒結婚的人，沒結婚的人也會羨慕結了婚的人。一個人必須在任何情況或任何時間下，都至少有三條路可走，這時出現了較寬廣游裕的轉圜空間可供選擇，此謂之為「彈性」，他不再擔心立即的限制與壓力，便可以從容的做決定。
心靈諮商師的責任就是在為委託人「找路」，天本來就無絕人之路，那怕是再困難再冤屈的事，也有隱藏在另一端的「出口」，只是當事者或由於太執著，或由於急怒攻心，或遭蒙蔽，或因聰明智慧不足，因此在「山窮水盡疑無路」之際，看不出「花明柳暗又一村」。心靈諮商師不需要代委託人決定任何事，但必須要能為委託人開闢出可供抉擇的空間。條條大路通羅馬，路是人走出來的，所有的路本來就都躺在人的腳下，只是委託人看不出來，心靈諮商師無法幫助委託人走他該走的路，但卻可以拿個探照燈，幫委託人照亮他可以走得下去的路。

If a person has no way out, this is “an impasse” the only way is Suicide ;
If a person only has one way to go, there is a “choice”; life would be colorless, , there is “no alternative,” he will live in pain;
If a person can only choose one of two routes, it is the “dilemma or catch 22 “; he or she will not find a way to live fully, regardless of which route he chooses, he will regret he did not choose the other choice, just like what married people would envy those not married, not married people would envy what married people.
It is a must in any circumstances or at any time, we have at least three routes to take, then these present a wide margin of “flexibility”, we will no longer be worried about the restrictions and pressure immediately, and we will be able to make a choice with ease .
A spiritual counselor uses his wisdom as a tool to suggest to the client “which routes are available “. Even in a “no way out situation “, No matter how hard it is, there is always higher solution(s) hidden, but the client may not be able to see the choices if he is too rigid, or in a rage , high emotional state, or is confused , or he lacks wisdom and experience .
A Spiritual counselor does not give advice to hic client as to which choice to make, but he must be able to open up the space of possibility for the client.
